Here's a piece of music I came up with for this electronic music class I'm in.
It's only 30 seconds but in 3 sections. The tentative titles are:
1. I
2. noiSE
3. forget about it
Hopefully those will help you understand what it means!
enjoy!
This Is Girl Talk.
Night Ripper
Girl Talk's music is incredibly catchy. This is due to the effect of hearing snippets of music that are well recognized combined with other snippets of music that are just as popular in order to form something new and fresh. Thus, my first listen through of this album was really exciting because there are countless moments where I stopped and said to myself "Hey cool! That was 50 Cent, Mariah Carey, the Verve, or Billy Joel" and all of it is put together about as seamlessly as you can imagine from a collection of songs and artists that are all in such stark contrast. Take the first track from the album for example:
Here's a list of songs that were sampled for this song taken from Wikipedia.
1. "Once Again" – 2:40
- 0:00 Ciara - "Goodies"
- 0:09 Boston - "Foreplay/Long Time"
- 0:12 Ludacris - "Pimpin' All Over the World"
- 0:32 Fabolous - "Breathe"
- 1:16 Ying Yang Twins - "Wait (The Whisper Song)"
- 1:22 The Verve - "Bittersweet Symphony"
- 1:44 Outkast - "Intro" from Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
- 1:48 Webbie - "Give Me That"
- 1:57 Oasis - "Wonderwall"
- 1:57 Slim Thug - "I Ain't Heard Of That"
- 2:06 Arrested Development - "Tennessee"
- 2:08 Webbie - "Give Me That"
- 2:08 Young Jeezy ft. Mannie Fresh - "And Then What"
- 2:19 Genesis - "Follow You, Follow Me"
- 2:19 Boredoms - "Acid Police"
- 2:22 Positive K - "I Got A Man"
- 2:30 The Five Stairsteps - "O-o-h Child"
- 2:38 Eminem - "Ass Like That"
Pretty catchy right? On the surface yes, but when I listened again more critically, there are some sections that just make me scratch my head. One that jumps out starts at 1:16 when the Ying Yang Twins track comes in followed by The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony. I don't know about you, but something just sounds wrong to me when the regal sounding strings of Bittersweet Symphony is overdubbed with the Ying Yang Twins whispering to me "Wait till you see my dick" and "Beat the pussy hole". Bittersweet Symphony has now been given an entirely new and cheap meaning.
Anyways, there are a few other instances throughout the album where the song match ups just seem really strange to me. Maybe there is a reason for all of Girl Talk's arrangements and if there is, it'd be great to hear it from the horse's mouth but sometimes its just so random to me.
Lastly, here's another real catchy track and the sample listing to it.
4. "Too Deep" – 2:29
- 0:00 (7:38) Dem Franchize Boyz - "I Think They Like Me"
- 0:00 (7:38) Dr. Dre - "Deep Cover"
- 0:07 (7:45) Positive K - "I Got a Man"
- 0:10 (7:48) Paul McCartney and Wings - "Jet"
- 0:35 (8:13) Mariah Carey - "We Belong Together"
- 0:40 (8:18) Juelz Santana - "Dipset (Santana's Town)"
- 0:53 (8:31) KRS-One - "Sound of da Police"
- 1:04 (8:42) Aerosmith - "Come Together" (Beatles cover)
- 1:14 (8:52) Nelly, Paul Wall, Ali, Big Gipp - "Grillz"
- 1:25 (9:03) The Smashing Pumpkins - "Today"
- 1:35 (9:13) The Main Ingredient - "Everybody Plays The Fool"
- 1:47 (9:25) Paul Wall ft. Big Pokey - "Sittin' Sidewayz"
- 1:55 (9:33) Alicia Keys - "Unbreakable"
- 1:57 (9:35) Phantom Planet - "California"
- 2:18 (9:56) Clipse - "Grindin'"
There Are No Such Thing as Shark Attacks
I know this is random, but I just want to clear this up for people out there.
There are these things called shark attacks, but there is no such thing as a shark attack. I have never seen a real shark attack.
I know you’re making a weird face as you’re reading this. OK people, a shark attack is not what we see on TV and what people portray it as.
We’re humans. We live on land.
Sharks live in water.
So if you’re swimming in the water and a shark bites you, that’s called trespassing. That is called trespassing. That is not a shark attack.
A shark attack is if you’re chilling at home, sitting on your couch, and a shark comes in and bites you; now that’s a shark attack. Now, if you’re chilling in the water, that is called invasion of space. So I have never heard of a shark attack.
When I see on the news where it’s like, “There have been 10 shark
attacks,” I’m like, “Hey, for real?! They’re just running around?
Sharks are walking now, huh! We live on the land, we don’t live
underwater.”
What a smart guy.
Movie Moment
Movie Moment is a new segment that I just came up with right now. However, it is nothing special or original. I'll just review movies that I have recently seen based on a scale that fluctuates with however I'm feeling at the time.
Today's Movie Is:
Today I watched this movie when I was at work. I found it in 10 parts on YouTube and watched all of them in succession. It was pretty entertaining I guess. I mean, I definitely wouldn't have watched it if Street Fighter 2 didn't have some sort of sentimental value to me, but still it was kinda neat. Anyways, the characters in the movie look like they have been taking steroids ever since they were able to take in food that wasn't their mother's breast milk. Speaking of mothers, I think it'd also be a safe assumption to say that their parents probably also took a lot of steroids just to give these freaks a running start when they were born. The plot is pretty ridiculous as you can imagine, the action is alright, and there are too many characters for there to be any real character development. In fact, the ties that I had with any of the characters were based on my experiences as a kid playing the game. Having said that, it is a little weird now that my mental impressions of these characters conjured in my own imagination have been replaced by something concrete and absolute. Either way, I'd only watch this if you had some sort of attachment to the video game.
Movie Moment Merit: 5/10
Something filled up
my heart with nothing,
someone told me not to cry.
But now that I’m older,
my heart’s colder,
and I can see that it’s a lie.
Children wake up,
hold your mistake up,
before they turn the summer into dust.
If the children don’t grow up,
our bodies get bigger but our hearts get torn up.
We’re just a million little god’s causing rain storms turning every good thing to rust.
I guess we’ll just have to adjust.
With my lighnin’ bolts a glowin’
I can see where I am goin’ to be
when the reaper he reaches and touches my hand.
With my lighnin’ bolts a glowin’
I can see where I am goin’
With my lighnin’ bolts a glowin’
I can see where I am go-goin’
You better look out below!
Tonight after after I drove home from 3 hours of basketball, I sat in
my driveway and listened to Sarah MacLachlan's Arms of an Angel on the
radio until the song was over.
Set out for a great adventure!
So as some of you may know, I've decided to embark on a trip to New York, New York between the dates of August 8th through the 13th. I'm pretty excited about this but I need some help populating my to-do list when I get there. If any of you have any suggestions, please leave a comment or something.
Here are some things that interest me if that helps at all:
- Visual Art (drawn, painted, sculpted, photographed, etc.)
- Dinosaurs
- Music
- Jazz clubs
- Aquariums
- Food
- Theater
Thank you,
Samuel Chang
Hey, I'm back!
Sorry for the recent absence from this blog but it's much more difficult to keep up with this now that I'm in Austin. It was much easier when I was in Taiwan. I think it's because alot more stuff was going on when I was there and I also had no friends.
Okay, this idea just came to me...
Here's a Chang family update!
Daniel Chang: 18/M/Durham, NC.Daniel's in North Carolina doing some research that I hear he doesn't
like that much. I also think that he is working at a music studio where
he is doing some recording for the drummer from the group Sixpence None
The Richer. More recently, Daniel asked mom and pop for a car so he
could do some other job for Warner Bros. Unfortunately, this wish
wasn't granted. If anyone has a spare car or cash upwards of $5,000 or
so, please contact any Chang family member through any conventional
communication channel (ie: phone, AIM, e-mail, facebook, etc.).
Amaris Chang: 16/F/New York, NY.
Amaris is currently in New York City doing some art summer school stuff. She recently bought a large rubber ball from a store and covered it in paper as an art project. She then tried to put some steel rods in the ball but in attempting this, the ball collapsed, thus, ruining the project. In more current news, I hear she is having fun at camp.
As for myself, I've been continuing work at IBM and doing some more summer school stuff at ACC. I finished up History 2 and am about to start Texas History, which should be as interesting and painful as watching the Sun slowly burn out.
Okay, so not the most interesting or inspired of posts, but it's a start right? You know it will only get better from here so stay tuned!
Hey!....Hey! Listen to this!!
This is a boring ass blog.
